Every species has its own comfort zone, and many need different conditions for colonizing and fruiting. Pick a species, choose the stage, and enter your current temperature and humidity to see whether your setup is in range.

Reading the mushrooms

  • Long stems, small caps — too much CO₂. Increase fresh air exchange.
  • Cracked or dry caps — humidity too low or air blowing directly on them.
  • Yellow, slimy spots — too wet; standing water on the surface (bacterial blotch).
  • Coral-like lion’s mane, antler reishi — high CO₂. Fine for reishi antlers, less ideal for lion’s mane.

FAQ

Do mushrooms need light?

Not for energy, but most species use light as a cue to form pins and orient caps. About 12 hours a day of indirect daylight or a 6500 K LED is plenty.

What’s the easiest species to start with?

Oysters. They colonize fast, tolerate imperfect conditions and fruit readily. Pink oysters suit warm homes; blue oysters suit cooler rooms.

Does humidity matter during colonization?

Very little, as long as the bag or jar is closed with a filter patch — the substrate holds its own moisture. Humidity becomes critical once you open it to fruit.
